Men's Basketball 3/11/2022 10:48:14 PM Vermont, UMBC Renew Rivalry in 2022 #AEHoops Title Game BURLINGTON, Vt. – For the third time in the last five years, UMBC and Vermont will play for the America East men’s basketball title. #1 Vermont hosts #2 UMBC at Patrick Gymnasium on the campus of the University of Vermont on Saturday at 11 a.m. Doug Sherman and Paul Biancardi have the call on ESPN2. The will also be broadcast on Westwood One radio nationally and on Sirius XM. The Catamounts routed NJIT in the quarterfinals and Binghamton in the semifinals to reach the title tilt while UMBC beat UMass Lowell and Hartford. #1 Vermont (26-5, 17-1) Vermont is making its sixth championship game appearance in the last seven years and 14th all-time. The Catamounts are 6-2 all-time at Patrick Gym in Title Games. UVM seeks its league best ninth title. With a win, John Becker would tie Jim Calhoun and Will Brown for the most titles all-time as a head coach. The Catamounts won their sixth-straight regular-season title and have won 21 of their last 22 games. Ryan Davis became the 10th player to earn Player of the Year honors a second time. #2 UMBC Retrievers (18-13, 11-7) UMBC is in its third championship game in the last five years. The Retrievers have won 12 of their last 15 games. First-year head coach Jim Ferry can join Karl Fogel (Northeastern ’87) and John Becker (Vermont ’12). UMBC is seeking its third-ever league crown (2008, ’18). Keondre Kennedy earned first-team All-Conference honors. The Catamounts swept the 2021-22 season series by an average of 22.0 points. This is the third title game matchup between the teams with the Retrievers taking the 2018 meeting and the Catamounts gaining revenge in 2019. This will be the 17th time the top seeds have met for the league crown with the No. 1 seed having gone 11-5 previously.
