Baseball 11/9/2022 2:04:55 PM Jeremy Peña - Maine Black Bear to World Series MVP Jeremy Peña shined brightest on baseball’s biggest stage as the former Maine Black Bear took home World Series MVP honors last week after helping to lead the Astros to their second World Series. It’s been an impressive year for the rookie who had to step into a starting shortstop role in the spring following the departure of all-star Carlos Correia from the organization. He did more than that, earning recognition for his hitting as well as his fielding. However, he saved his best for the playoffs. Peña hit a home run in the top of the 18th inning to complete a sweep against Seattle in the America League Divisional Series and then in the American League Championship Series he came through with a three-run homer to help the Astros sweep the Yankees. For his efforts he was named ALCS MVP. In the World Series, Peña batted an even .400 with at least one hit in each of the six games against the Phillies, scoring five times and belting one more home run with three RBI in leading the Astros victory. He was named World Series MVP, the first rookie position player to receive the honor. Peña spent three seasons at Maine as the starting shortstop and earned All-Conference honors in 2018. He hit .305 for the Black Bears over three seasons with 196 hits, 75 RBI, 12 home runs, 32 doubles, 10 triples, and 30 stolen bases. He left following the 2018 season as he was drafted in the third round of the MLB amateur draft.
