Bearcats and Great Danes Advance in #AEMSOC Quarterfinals

Fifth seed Binghamton gave up a lead in the second half but rallied for an overtime win against UMBC while UAlbany earned a 2-0 victory in the America East Men’s Soccer Quarterfinals on Saturday evening.
 
The Bearcats trailed 1-0 early but came back to take a 2-1 lead in the second half against #4 UMBC. The Retrievers forced overtime with a goal, but Binghamton responded with the game-winner in the 99th minute. UAlbany, meanwhile scored twice in the second half to shut out #6 NJIT 2-0.
 
The Great Danes head to Burlington, Vt. on Nov. 10 for the semifinals and a 7 p.m. matchup with UVM. New Hampshire, meanwhile, will host the Bearcats on Thursday evening at 6 p.m.

#3 UAlbany 2, #6 NJIT 0
  • It was a scoreless first half with NJIT holding a slight 4-3 advantage in shots.
  • The best chance for either team came in the 30th minute as a through ball slid past Shafique Wilson and Jordi Sanchez had a chance for a goal, but Tiago Dias slid across the goal mouth to kick it out of bounds.
  • Mohamed Souman gave UAlbany a 1-0 lead at 73:12 off an assist from Jackson Finn.
  • The Great Danes added to their lead in the 84th minute as they drew a foul in the box and Pantelis Panteli fired home the penalty kick to provide the 2-0 final margin. 

#5 Binghamton 3, #4 UMBC 2 (2OT)
  • UMBC grabbed a 1-0 advantage just 12:41 into the contest on a Ismailcan Usta goal off a feed from Taylor Calheira.
  • Binghamton answered in the 36th minutes as Will Noecker headed in a free kick to tie it.
  • The Bearcats pulled in front 2-1 at 66:15 as Parker McKnight send a ball across middle of the six which was finished by Anthony Lazaridis.
  • Lasse Kelp followed with his first career goal in the 69th minute for UMBC to knot the score 2-2 and eventually send the game to overtime.
  • In the final minute of the first overtime, Markos Touroukis fired a shot from just outside the top of the 18 past a diving Quantrell Jones for a 3-2 advantage, and the defense held off UMBC in the second overtime.

America East is one of the best men’s soccer conferences in the country. Four teams have reached the third round of the NCAA tournament since 2014, including UMBC getting all the way to the College Cup in 2014. The conference has received multiple bids to the NCAA tournament in three of last seven seasons, including in 2021 when both UNH and league champion Vermont received bids.
