WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – For the second time in as many seasons, Monmouth and Stanford will meet in the America East field hockey championship game.
The Hawks used three different goal scorers to defeat UMass Lowell 4-1 in the semifinals on Thursday. The Cardinal got a late goal from Corinne Zanolli to break a tie and beat Maine 2-1.
The No. 1 and No. 3 seeds will play in the title game Saturday, April 24 at 12 p.m. on ESPN+ for the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Championship.
Semifinals Recap
#1 Monmouth 4, #4 UMass Lowell 1
- Annick van Lange opened the scoring in the third minute from Reese Bloomstead.
- The game was tied at 1-1 after the first quarter as Jenna Berger scored the equalizer for the River Hawks.
- The Hawks retook the lead on a penalty stroke in the second quarter. Neither team scored on their combined six penalty corner attempts in the half.
- Defensive Player of the Year Ireen Frenken scored twice for the Hawks.
- Monmouth outshot UMass Lowell 14-6 and held the River Hawks without a shot in the second half.
#3 Stanford 2, #2 Maine 1
- First-team All-Conference selection Sarah Johnson tapped home a penalty corner just before halftime to give Stanford a 1-0 advantage.
- Maine senior Brooke Sulinski evened the score in the 34th minute when she received a long fast-break pass from All-Conference first teamer Chloe Walton.
- Offensive Player of the Year Corinne Zanolli was awarded a penalty stroke with just over two minutes remaining and capitalized by potting the game-winner.
- Mia Borley made five of her six saves in the first half.
- The Cardinal held the shot advantage 15-5.
Monmouth will look to avenge last year’s loss in the title game and reach the NCAA tournament for the fourth time in seven seasons. The Hawks have advanced to the championship game on their home turf in each of their two seasons in America East. Stanford has advanced in four of the past five #AEFH tournaments and will look to win its fourth title in that span.
