Back to Back! Stony Brook Retains #AEWSOC Trophy

LOWELL, Mass. - For the second-straight season and third time in the last four, Stony Brook is the America East women’s soccer champion. The Seawolves rode a first-half goal from Fanny Gotesson to a 1-0 win over Binghamton in the Spring 2021 America East Women’s Soccer Championship game on Saturday evening at UMass Lowell’s Cushing Field.

With the win, the Seawolves earned their fourth-ever #AEWSOC title and became just the fourth #AEWSOC program to win consecutive titles joining UAlbany, Hartford and Boston University. Stony Brook earned the conference’s automatic bid to the Spring 2021 NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship and will learn their draw during the selection show on Monday, April 19 at 1 p.m. on NCAA.com.

Gotesson was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after scoring her first goal of the season. She tallied the lone score of the game in the ninth minute, taking a feed from Alyssa Francese and finding the back of the net.

The Seawolves controlled play in the first half taking 12 shots. But Binghamton, which was making its first championship game appearance since 200,9 fought back in the second and held an 8-2 shots advantage but was unable to find the back of the net.

Haylee Poltorak ended with five saves for Binghamton (5-4-0) while Emerson Richmond-Burke had three for Stony Brook (6-3-0).

Gotesson was joined on the All-Championship team by Francese, who had four points in the tournament, as well as teammates Kimmy Chavkin and Catharina von Drigalski. Dora Hayes, who scored the game-winner in the semifinals, headlined Binghamton’s selections and was joined by Olivia McKnight and Erin Theiller.  UMass Lowell’s Dunja Mostarac and Olivia Sandahl and Vermont’s Lydia Kessel and Angie Salvi rounded out the choices.

In addition to earning MOP honors, Gotesson earned her second-straight Elite 18 Award for having the highest GPA among student-athletes competing in the championship. The senior carries a 3.98 as a double major in business management and sociology.
