DURHAM, N.H. – UMass Lowell remains on top of America East cross country after defending both women’s and men’s championships on Friday.
The River Hawks became the first #AEXC program to sweep the championships in consecutive years since Boston University in 1996-97. They are only the second program to ever do so. Visit #AEXC Championship Central for final results, recap and highlights.

Emily Mackay won the women’s 5K in record time, crossing the finish line 16:24.67. The now two-time champion’s time bested 11-time All-American Elle Purrier’s previous conference best of 16:27.1. Mackay joins Purrier and Hannah Reinhardt as the only back-to-back individual champions in over a decade and is the sixth in women’s history.
Dan Schaffer won the men’s 8K in a time of 23:55.81 as Binghamton became the first school in 20 years to produce both individual champions in the same #AEXC meet. Schaffer earned First-Team All-Conference honors along with UMass Lowell’s Derek Holmes, Drew Everett, Kyle Cloutier and Christopher Alfond, Maine’s Luke Marsanskis and Stony Brook’s Robert Becker. On the All-Conference Second Team were finishers 8-through-14: Stony Brook’s Carlos Santos, Evan Brennan and Colin Ross and UMass Lowell’s John Riley, Daniel Cosgrove, Benjamin Drezek and Jake Velazquez.
The women’s All-Conference First Team was comprised of Mackay and Binghamton teammate Aziza Chigatayeva, UMass Lowell’s Emily Sessa, Izzy Giesing, Kaley Richards and Jenna Solimine and Stony Brook’s Fiona McLoughlin. The Second-Team All-Conference selections were New Hampshire’s Jill Walker, Addison Cox, Kira Nolan and Annemarie Martell, Stony Brook’s Nicole Garcia, Vermont’s Jane Leighton and UMass Lowell’s MacKenzie Doyle.
New Hampshire's Jill Walker and Stony Brook's Fiona McLoughlin shared Most Outstanding Rookie Honors with their finishes in the women's race. UMBC's Cameron Hindle and UMass Lowell's Jake Velazquez also earned Co-Most Outstanding Rookie honors while UMass Lowell won Coaching Staff of the Year for both genders.
Leighton and Drezek earned the conference’s Elite 18 award as the top finishers with the highest GPA. Leighton, a Vermont senior who finished tenth, carries a 3.99 GPA in professional nursing. Drezek carries a 4.0 GPA in graduate school purusing exercise science.
