Six Standout Student-Athletes Named Spring Scholar-Athletes

BOSTON – Despite the cancellation of the spring sports season, six standout student-athletes who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically throughout their collegiate careers have been named 2019-20 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes. The honorees, headlined by three past selection, were announced by the conference office on Thursday afternoon.

2019-20 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes
 Cara Sherman, Sr. – Women's Outdoor Track & Field
  • Graduated with a 3.90 GPA as a dual major in biology and mathematics. 
  • Has a 3.94 graduate GPA in Biodiversity, Conservation and Policy.
  • Six-time America East All-Academic choice including 2020 Outdoor Track & Field. 
  • Won the 10,000-meter run at the 2019 America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
  • 11-time All-Conference honoree.

Jackson Olson, Hartford, Jr. – Baseball
  • Carries a 3.82 GPA in marketing.
  • America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete.
  • Two-time America East All-Academic selection.
  • Former America East All-Championship Team selection.

Courtney Coppersmith, UMBC, So. – Softball
  • Has a 3.77 GPA majoring in biochemistry.
  • CoSIDA Academic All-District and America East All-Academic Selection.
  • 2019
  • America East Helping Hands Team honoree.
  • All-American pitcher in 2019.
  • America East Pitcher and Rookie of the year. 

Jakob Patterson, UAlbany, Sr. - Men's Lacrosse
  • Repeat men's lacrosse selection.
  • Holds a 3.86 GPA majoring in sociology.
  • Two-time America East All-Academic selection.
  • America East Offensive Player of the Year.

Jordyn Marr, UAlbany, Sr., - Women's Lacrosse
  • Repeat women's lacrosse selection.
  • Holds a 3.98 GPA majoring in business administration/management information & sociology.
  • Two-time America East All-Academic selection.
  • America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete.
  • 2020 America East Helping Hands Team honoree.
  • America East Elite 18 winner in women's lacrosse in 2019,

Ben Drezek, UMass Lowell, Jr. – Men's Outdoor Track & Field
  • Second Scholar-Athlete honor of the year (cross country).
  • Has a 3.96 GPA in exercise physiology.
  • Three-time America East All-Academic choice in 2019-20.
  • Placed 12th at NCAA Northeast Regional race and earned a spot as a NCAA Cross Country Championship participant.
  • Steeplchase champion at 2019 America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
 
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the spring season including baseball, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track & field and softball. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a projected starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.

Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
