UAlbany Sweeps 2020 #AETF Indoor Championships

BOSTON – Unprecedented dominance continues for the UAlbany track and field teams as the Great Danes swept the 2020 America East Indoor Track and Field Championships for the eight time in nine years. It is the 14th time in 15 years the Great Danes have claimed the men’s title while the women have won eight consecutive and 10 of 11.

UAlbany junior Asia Jinks was voted Most Outstanding Female Track Performer of the meet and also received the Coaches’ Award for compiling the most points over the course of the meet. Jinks secured a gold medal in consecutive races on Saturday by grabbing the lead in the final stretch of the 400-meter dash after winning the 60m hurdles just prior. She also anchored the record-breaking 4x400m relay.
 
Elizabeth Lodge was named Most Outstanding Female Field Performer. The Hartford junior won the pentathlon and the high jump.
 
Jan Michael Gutierrez Almedina was named Most Outstanding Male Track Performer. The Great Dane set a new meet record in the 200-meter dash and also led the winning 4x400m relay.
 
New Hampshire senior Zachary Astle swept the men’s throwing events, earning him Most Outstanding Male Field Performer. Astle won the shot put for the third year in a row.
 
The Coaches’ Award was given to Harmodio Cruz III after the UAlbany junior compiled the most points by any male student-athlete over the course of the weekend.
 
Nadja Ashley of Stony Brook and Louis Gordon of UAlbany each were named Most Outstanding Rookie of the Meet. Ashley won a silver medal in the 400m and also medaled in the 200m and 4x400 relay while Gordon won the high jump, clearing 7'2.25".
 
Roberto Vives and the UAlbany coaching staff were voted Coaching Staff of the Year in both women’s and men’s competition. It is the sixth-straight year the Great Danes received the award for coaching the women’s team.
 
UMass Lowell junior Kyle Cloutier was awarded the Elite 18 medallion with a 3.99 GPA in business administration. UAlbany junior Adelaide Cooke also received the award with a 3.98 GPA in human biology.

Day 2 Highlights
  • UAlbany senior Omahri Sturdivant repeated as champion in the men’s triple jump, launching himself 50’4” while teammate Robert Blue took silver.
  • After winning the pentathlon Friday, Hartford junior Elizabeth Lodge won the high jump as the Hawks took the top-two spots on the podium in the event.
  • Shelby Bigsby repeated as champion in the women’s shot put, tossing 50'4.75".
  • Kaley Richards defended her title in the mile, clocking in at 4:50.36 and later became the first River Hawk to win the 1,000m run with a late kick.
  • Binghamton junior Dan Schaffer held off a late push from Stony Brook’s Robert Becker to win the men’s mile by less than two-tenths of a second.
  • Binghamton senior Troy Zanger won the men’s heptathlon with 5141 points, the highest point total since 2016.
  • UAlbany swept the men’s 60m dash headlined by junior Garfield Napier’s sprint of 6.82.
  • The Great Danes also took the top-two spots in the women’s 60m dash led by junior Chidinma Matthew’s time of 7.60.
  • After surrendering a lead in the closing meters of the women’s 400, Amanda Stead became the first Seawolf to win the women’s 200m with a time of 24.18.
  • Jan Michael Gutierrez Almedina defended his title in the men’s 200m dash in record-breaking fashion, crossing the finish line in 20.98.
  • UAlbany’s quartet of Jonel Lacey, Chidinma Matthew, Rori Lowe and Asia Jinks broke the record in the women’s 4x400m relay with a time of 3:45.75.
