UMass Lowell Sweeps Opening #AEBASE Awards of 2020
BOSTON – ‘Play ball’ was heard around the country last week as the 2020 baseball season got underway. Five of the seven America East baseball programs began their seasons, including UMass Lowell, which opened with a series win over Canisius.
Here are the conference’s week #1 baseball awards of the 2020 season:
#AEBASE Weekly Award Winners – Feb. 18
Player of the Week
Gerry Siracusa, UMass Lowell – So., RHP/OF, Kinnelon, N.J.
- Hit .455, scoring four runs in a four-game series against Canisius, guiding UMass Lowell to a 3-1 start.
- Siracusa also pitched three scoreless innings in relief over the course of the weekend.
- This is his first career #AEBASE weekly award.
Pitcher of the Week
Josh Becker, UMass Lowell – Sr., RHP, Burlington, Mass.
- Tossed 3.2 innings of relief, accruing two saves.
- Becker struck out eight batters in total after striking out the side in both innings of work in his season debut.
- This is Becker’s first career Pitcher of the Week nod after being named Rookie of the Week once last year.
Rookie of the Week
Keagan Calero, UMass Lowell – Fr., SS, Rochester, N.H.
- Scored six runs and drove in five in his first four games for the River Hawks.
- Slugged .615 behind two doubles and a home run as all three of his hits went for extra bases.
- Calero also drew three walks and was successful in all three base-stealing attempts.
