New Hampshire & UMBC (M) Captures 2020 #AESD Championship Titles

Worcester, Mass. - On the final day of competition, New Hampshire won the women’s team title and UMBC men’s team captured gold at the 2020 America East Swimming and Diving Championship.

New Hampshire earns it's eighth America East women's title while the UMBC men's team captures first place for the fourth year in a row, making it their 12th league title.

Anna Metzler of New Hampshire was named Most Outstanding Swimmer. The New Hampshire sophomore now holds meet records in the 200 free, 500 free, 400 IM and the 200 back. Corinne Carbone of New Hampshire earned the Dave Alexander Coaches' Award. Jamy Lum of New Hampshire captured the Most Outstanding Rookie Award.

New Hampshire’s Allison Stefanelli won the women's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events. The senior has won the 3-meter diving event for three consecutive years and was named Most Outstanding Diver.

Niklas Weigelt of UMBC was named the Most Outstanding Rookie award, while his teammate Kai Wisner was named the men's Most Outstanding Swimmer. Senior Illia Rattsev was handed the Coaches' Awarded for accruing the most points over the course of the meet.

Sophomore Chris Egan won both the men's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and was named Most Outstanding Diver.

UMBC's Ilia Rattsev and Natalija Marin received the Elite 18 Award. Rattsev has a 3.97 GPA in bioinformatics and computational biology while Marin holds a 3.87 GPA in mechanical engineering.

Day 4 Highlights
  • In the women's 1650-yard freestyle, Vanessa Esposito of UMBC finished with a time of 17:11.28.
  • UMBC’s Kai Wisner repeated as champion and set a new meet record in the 1650, touching the wall in 15:21.92 while also getting an NCAA B cut.
  • Anna Metzler continues to shine this year as she defended her women’s 200 backstroke title, clocking in with a time of 1:57.17.
  • UMBC’s Garrett Wlochowski earned gold in the men's 200 backstroke with a time of 1:45.34.
  • Freshman Olivia Stille of New Hampshire captured first place in the 100 free, touching the wall in a time of 50.89.
  • UMBC junior Ilia Rattsev completed the sweep of the freestyle sprints with a gold medal in the men's 100 free with a time of 44.14. The senior also becomes the first ever swimmer in America East history to sweep the freestyle sprints three consecutive years.
  • Freshman Jamy Lum wins another gold this weekend as she clocked in at 2:13.36 in the 200 breaststroke.
  • Ryan Board of Binghamton takes the gold in the 200 breaststroke, touching the wall in 2:01.52.
  • In the 200 butterfly, New Hampshire’s senior Corinne Carbone won with a time of 2:00.21 while UMBC’s freshman Ethan Riser captured first place with a time of 1:47.89.
  • In the final events of the weekend, New Hampshire won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:24.79 and the UMBC men clocked in at 2:58.82.
