UMass Lowell Claims #AESB Regular-Season Crown; Tourney Bracket Set
For the first time in program history, UMass Lowell is the America East softball regular-season champion. The River Hawks took two of three games from UAlbany over the weekend to win the crown by one and a half games. UMass Lowell will be the top seed for next week’s conference championship, which will be hosted by the University of Hartford for the first time. The remaining seeds and matchups for the 2019 championship were set Saturday, the final day of the regular season.
The tournament will feature six teams for the fourth-straight year. The four-day double-elimination tournament will take place May 8-11 at Hartford.
UAlbany, winner of the last two #AESB crowns, will be the No. 2 seed, while Stony Brook is No. 3, UMBC is No. 4, host Hartford No. 5 and Binghamton No. 6.
The tournament begins on Wednesday with No. 4 UMBC facing No. 5 Hartford at 11 a.m. and No. 3 Stony Brook taking on No. 6 Binghamton at 1:30 p.m. The two losing teams will play an elimination game at 4 p.m. The top seeds, No. 1 UMass Lowell and No. 2 UAlbany, will be in action on Thursday, along with another elimination game. Three more games will be played Friday while the championship games will be played on Saturday. The league champion will receive an automatic bid to the 2019 NCAA Softball Championship.
