Stony Brook, Binghamton Remain in Winner's Bracket in 2019 #AEBASE Championship
Vestal, N.Y. – With Thursday victories on the diamond, No. 1 Stony Brook and No. 3 Binghamton will square off on Friday with the winner advancing to the 2019 America East Baseball championship game. No. 6 Hartford won its second-straight elimination game and have No. 2 UAlbany next on the schedule.
Stony Brook 7, UMass Lowell 6
With one out in the ninth inning and Stony Brook trailing by two runs, junior Chris Hamilton drove the ball over the right-field fence for a walk-off two-run home run. An hour and fifteen minute lightning delay interrupted the eighth inning after UMass Lowell had taken a 6-2 lead on Oscar Marchena’s second home run of the postseason. Immediately following the pause, Michael Wilson drove the first pitch over the wall and, two batters later, Dylan Resk brought the Seawolves within one with a two-run shot. Every Stony Brook batter recorded a hit in the opening game on Thursday, which featured five long balls.
Binghamton 18, UAlbany 4
The third-seeded Bearcats snapped UAlbany’s nine-game win streak with the biggest offensive explosion of the championship thus far. Binghamton scored a pair of runs in the top half of the first inning and never looked back, scoring in each of the first three frames while holding the two-seeded Great Danes scoreless. The third inning proved to be the epicenter for the Bearcat hitting machine as they tacked on seven runs, capped by a grand slam off the bat of junior TJ Wegmann. Starting pitcher Dominic Savino was charged with nine earned runs in four innings pitched. His counterpart Nick Gallagher pitched into the ninth inning and finished with eight strikeouts, allowing just one earned run.
Hartford 6, UMass Lowell 4
Joey Castellanos started the scoring with a first-inning home run and the River Hawks padded their lead in the second to make it 3-0. Hartford’s first run came on a wild pitch in the fourth and the Hawks turned up the throttle for five scores in the top of the sixth. The reigning champs loaded the bases with one out in the inning and Bryce Ramsay, Devin Kellogg, Drew Holtgrieve and Jackson Olson all knocked bases loaded RBIs. Nicholas Dombkowski struck out ten batters in eight innings and James Judenis shut the door in the ninth to earn a save.
No. 1 Stony Brook will play No. 3 Binghamton in the winner’s bracket on Friday at 11 a.m. No. 2 UAlbany and No. 6 Hartford play an elimination game at 2:30 p.m. with the Stony Brook/Binghamton loser and UAlbany/Hartford winner facing off in a second elimination game to conclude the day.
