Binghamton, UMass Lowell, Hartford Open in #AEBASE Championship with Wins
Vestal, N.Y. – The 2019 America East Baseball Championship got underway on Wednesday at Binghamton University with two higher seeds advancing in the bracket. No. 4 UMass Lowell opened the day with a shutout victory followed by No. 3 Binghamton winning in walk-off fashion. Reigning champion Hartford staved off elimination after losing to the Bearcats to advance.
UMass Lowell 5, Maine 0
The River Hawks chalked up two runs in the bottom of the first inning on a two-run Oscar Marchena home run to left field. Another extra-base hit produced more runs in the bottom of the second when Mark Tumosa came up with a two-run triple. The junior finished the day 2-for-3 with three RBI. Nick Rand silenced the Maine bats, pitching eight shutout innings, allowing four hits and striking out six. Cody Laweryson struck out 12 on the mound for the Black Bears.
Binghamton 2, Hartford 1
In a defensive battle, the Bearcats loaded the bases in the ninth and advanced to the next round in heart-pumping style. Shane Marshall reached on an infield single to score Jake Evans for the second and final run of the game. Marshall finished with a game-high four hits. Both teams made stellar plays in the field and Pitcher of the Year Ben Anderson tossed a complete game, allowing just one run to earn the win.
Hartford 6, Maine 5
Hartford jumped off to a fast start, scoring three times in the top of the first inning and overcame two deficits to advance in the loser’s bracket. Drew DeMartino drove in four runs, three of which came with the Hawks trailing in the game. His solo home run in the sixth tied the game and the sophomore was then responsible for the game-winning run, which came on a two-run double in the seventh. Billy DeVito exited after the second inning and the Hawks’ bullpen held fort, allowing just one run the rest of the way.
No. 1 Stony Brook and No. 4 UMass Lowell will play in the first game of the day Thursday at 11 a.m. followed by No. 2 UAlbany and No. 3 Binghamton at 2:30 p.m. and an elimination game in the evening. Friday’s schedule includes three more games with Saturday playing host to the championship game(s). All early round action will be broadcast on AmericaEast.tv and the championship game(s) will be on ESPN+ Saturday at 1 p.m.
