Four Repeat Selections Highlight Winter Scholar-Athletes
BOSTON – Six standout student-athletes who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically this year and throughout their collegiate careers highlight 2018-19 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes as announced Thursday afternoon by the conference office. Four repeat selections highlight the honorees.
2018-19 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes
Joe Sherburne, UMBC, Sr. – Men’s Basketball
- Repeat selection.
- Graduated with a perfect 4.00 GPA in financial economics and carries a perfect 4.00 graduate GPA in data science.
- Became the first America East student-athlete in any sport to be named CoSIDA Academic All-America East Team Member of the Year.
- Earned Academic All-American honors for the second-straight year.
- America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete.
- America East All-Academic choice for the third time in his career.
- First-team All-Conference selection.
Lindsey Abed, Hartford, Sr. – Women’s Basketball
- Repeat selection.
- Has a 3.67 GPA in psychology.
- CoSIDA first-team Academic All-District choice.
- America East All-Academic selection for the second-straight year.
- America East First-Team All-Conference and All-Defensive Team selection.
Paul Hogan, UMass Lowell, Sr. – Men’s Indoor Track & Field
- Repeat indoor track & field Scholar-Athlete selection and fifth overall.
- Graduated with a 3.57 GPA majoring in civil engineering.
- America East All-Academic Team honoree.
- Named Most Outstanding Male Track Performer at the 2019 America East Indoor Track & Field Championship and also earned the Coaches’ Award.
- Won both the 3,000 and 5,000-meter runs.
Lauren Trumble, Sr., Vermont – Women's Indoor Track & Field
- Second Scholar-Athlete award this year after winning the cross country honor.
- Carries a 3.83 GPA in biology.
- 2018-19 America East All-Academic selection.
- Named Most Outstanding Female Track Performer at the 2019 America East Indoor Track & Field Championship
- Set a meet record in the 1,000 meters.
Alexander Gliese, UMBC, Sr., – Men’s Swimming & Diving
- Holds a 3.73 GPA majoring in mechanical engineering.
- Two-time America East All-Academic choice.
- 2019 America East Most Outstanding Male Swimmer and Dave Alexander Coaches’ Award recipient.
- Set America East records in the 100 and 200-meter backstroke.
Maddy Popalis, Sr., UMBC – Women’s Swimming & Diving
- Holds a 3.87 GPA majoring in health administration & public policy/economics.
- Two-time All-America East selection.
- Earned four gold medals at the America East Swimming & Diving Championship, including in the 100 breaststroke.
- Led UMBC to the women's team championship.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving and men’s and women’s indoor track & field. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
