Maine Captures Trio of 2018-19 Women's #AEHoops Annual Awards
BOSTON - Several days removed from winning its second consecutive regular season title, Maine took home three of the conference’s five major awards as the All-Conference teams were announced Tuesday. New Hampshire and Hartford were also awarded major recognition on the day before the 2019 #AEPlayoffs tip off.

Maine junior Blanca Millan became the fourth student-athlete in league history to be named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season and the first since UAlbany's Shereesha Richards in 2014-15. New Hampshire freshman Kari Brekke was named Rookie of the Year, Hartford senior Alexia Douglas was selected as the Sixth Player of the Year and Maine Head Coach Amy Vachon earned Coach of the Year honors for the second time.
Player of the Year
Blanca Millan, Jr., G, Maine
- Led the conference in scoring (17.6 ppg) and steals (2.8 spg).
- Also led the league in scoring during conference play behind 45 percent shooting.
- Millan paced the league’s highest-scoring offense and had two 30-point games this season, including a league-high 36 against Brown.
- She is the first Black Bear to be named Player of the Year since Kim Corbitt in 2004-05.
Defensive Player of the Year
Blanca Millan, Jr., G, Maine
- Millan led the league in steals and ranked second in blocks (1.4 bpg).
- Her 2.8 steals per contest rank 22nd in the nation.
- The junior guard's 42 blocks on the season are a career-high for a single season.
- Millan is the first student-athlete to be named Player of the Year and Defensive Player of the Year in the same season since Shereesha Richards in 2014-15 and just the fourth in league history.
Rookie of the Year
Kari Brekke, Fr., G, New Hampshire
- Led all freshman with 10.0 points per game, including 11.4 during league play.
- Led the Wildcats with 2.3 assists per game.
- Brekke’s 36.0 minutes per game were the most on the team and third-most league-wide.
- She is the first Wildcat since Denise Beliveau in 2007-08 to earn Rookie of the Year honors.
Sixth Player of the Year
Alexia Douglas, Sr., G, Hartford
- Averaged 20.9 minutes per game, leading all reserves for Hartford.
- Her 42 steals rank inside the conference’s top-10 and contributed to the second-highest steal total among all Division I teams this season.
- Douglas averaged 6.4 points per game.
- She is the second Hawk to win the award, joining Morgan Lumb.
Coach of the Year
Amy Vachon, Maine - 2nd season
- Named Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season.
- Coached Maine to its league-best 16th regular season title in program history and fourth in five years.
- The Black Bears led the league in scoring (67.2 ppg) and field goal percentage (42%).
- The team averaged nearly 70 points per game in league play, shooting a conference-best 36 percent from three-point range.
Six seniors, four juniors, three sophomores and a pair of grad students comprise the three All-Conference teams. The first team is composed of five guards, all of whom play for top-four teams who will be hosting quarterfinal games.
