Stony Brook Moves Into 2018-19 Commissioner's Cup Lead Following Winter Season

BOSTON – For the first time since 2012, a school other than UAlbany leads the America East Commissioner’s Cup standings following the winter season as Stony Brook catapulted its way into first place two-thirds of the way through the 2018-19 academic year. The Seawolves, who are seeking their first-ever Commissioner’s Cup, hold a slight advantage on the Great Danes, winners of the last six Cups, in the latest standings released by the conference office Thursday afternoon.

The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference's 18 sports.

  • Stony Brook is the first school other than UAlbany to lead the Commissioner’s Cup standings following the winter season since Boston University did so in 2012.
  • Four different America East programs won the conference's six winter championships.
  • Through only 12 championships, every America East school has won at least one league championship or regular-season title or had a runner-up finish.
  • Vermont swept the men’s basketball regular-season and tournament titles for the second time in three seasons.
  • Maine won both the women’s basketball regular-season and tournament crowns for the second-straight season.
  • UAlbany swept the men’s and women’s indoor track & field titles for the sixth time in the last seven years.
  • UMBC swept the men’s and women’s swimming & diving crowns for the first time since 2011.
The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points. 

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, track & field, swimming & diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
