UAlbany, UMass Lowell Open Outdoor #AETF Season, Pocket Weekly Awards

BOSTON – The 2019 outdoor track and field season got underway just a week removed from the indoor national championship. UAlbany and UMass Lowell were the first #AETF programs to compete. Both traveled south as the Great Danes went to the Spring Break Classic in Puerto Rico and the River Hawks competed in the Shamrock Invitational in South Carolina.
 
Here are the conference’s weekly awards:
 
Female Track Performer of the Week
Sophia Myers, UAlbany – Fr., Hurdles/Sprints, Cambria Heights, N.Y.
  • Won the 100 meter hurdles at the Spring Break Classic.
  • Her time of 13.85 ranks 15th nationally.
  • This is Myers’s first career #AETF award.
 
Male Track Performer of the Week
Sidney Gibbons, UAlbany – Sr., Hurdles, St. Albans, N.Y.
  • Won the 110 meter hurdles and helped the 4x100m relay team to second place.
  • His 13.91 time in the hurdles is a personal best and ranks fifth in the country.
  • This is his second Performer of the Week award this academic year.
 
Female Field Performer of the Week
Venique Harris, UAlbany – Jr., Throws, Portmore, Jamaica
  • Won the discus throw at the Spring Break Classic.
  • She set a UAlbany record and recorded the second-farthest toss nationally, reaching 182’8”.
  • This is the first time Harris has been named Performer of the Week.
 
Male Field Performer of the Week
Vladimir Popusoi, UMass Lowell – Gr., Pole Vault, Greenfield, Mass.
  • Cleared 15’11.25” in the pole vault at the Shamrock Invite.
  • It was Popusoi’s best mark since the Terrier Classic the final week in January.
  • This is the first time Popusoi has earned a weekly honor since 2017.
