UAlbany, UMBC Open Season, Net #AEBASE Awards
BOSTON – UAlbany and UMBC began their 2019 baseball seasons last weekend and both teams earned series victories on the road. The Great Danes took two of three from Coppin State while the Retrievers did the same against UNC Asheville.
Here are the conference’s #AEBASE weekly awards:
Player of the Week
Christian Torres, UMBC – Jr., IF, Miami, Fla.
- Hit .417 and slugged .917 in series win over UNC Asheville.
- Scored five runs and also drove in five.
- This is Torres’ first career Player of the Week nod.
Pitcher of the Week
John Clayton, UAlbany – So., P, Glenville, N.Y.
- Threw 6.1 scoreless innings, earning the win over Coppin State.
- Struck out seven batters and did not walk anyone.
- Clayton earns Pitcher of the Week honors for the first time in his career.
Rookie of the Week
Ethan Wentzlaff, UMBC – Fr., OF, Damascus, Md.
- Hit .556 and slugged 1.000 in three-game span.
- Went 5-for-8 with a double, home run and five RBI in the final two games of the series.
- This is his first career #AEBASE award.
