UMBC Captures Both Women’s and Men’s 2019 #AESD Championship Titles

Worcester, Mass. - On the final day of competition, UMBC won both the women's and men's 2019 America East Swimming and Diving Championship.

UMBC earns it's seventh America East women's title while the UMBC men's team captures first place for the second year in a row, making it their 11th league title. The Retrievers' 1113.5 total points are the most by a men's team in a conference championship.

Juliana McDonald of Maine was named Most Outstanding Swimmer. The Maine senior now holds meet records in the 50 and 100 freestyle sprints. UMBC Hania Moro earned the Dave Alexander Coaches' Award. New Hampshire's Anna Metzler captured the Most Outstanding Rookie Award.

Binghamton's Amanda McGraw won the women's 1-meter diving event and took 2nd in the 3-meter event and was named Most Outstanding Diver.

Matt Bennici and Luka Zuric of UMBC shared the Most Outstanding Rookie award. The men's award was given to UMBC swimmer Alexander Gliese, who set new America East records in the men's 100 and 200 backstroke. Gliese also was handed the Coaches' Awarded for accruing the most points over the course of the meet.

Senior Elijah Wright won both the men's 1-meter and 3-meter diving events and was named Most Outstanding Diver.

UMBC's Connor Ganley and Vermont's Sophia Smith received the Elite 18 Award. Smith has a 3.89 GPA in elementary education while Ganley holds a 3.97 GPA in chemical engineering.

Day 4 Highlights
  • Maine's Juliana McDonald broke her second America East Championship record in tonight's women's 100 free with a time of 49.48.
  • In the women's 1650-yard freestyle, UMBC Hania Moro finished with a time of 16:39.38 as UMBC touched the wall in 15:35.20.
  • Alexander Gliese earned his second individual meet record in the men's 200 backstroke with a time of 1:44.09. New Hampshire freshman Anna Metzler captured first place, touching the wall in 1:58.33.
  • Luis Galvan Cardenas repeated as the 200 breaststroke champion, touching the wall in 2:00.16.
  • UMBC junior Ilia Rattsev completed the sweep of the freestyle sprints with a gold medal in the men's 100 free.
  • In the final events of the weekend, the UMBC women won the 400 freestyle relay in 3:24.17 and the UMBC men clocked in at 2:59.94.
