New Hampshire and UMBC (M) Take Early Lead on Day 1 of #AESD Championship
Worcester, Mass. – The 2019 America East Swimming and Diving Championships commenced Thursday at WPI. It’s the second consecutive year since 2013 that men’s swimming and diving teams competed in the championship.

Day 1 Highlights
- UMBC swept the 800-yard freestyle relays. The women earned the first gold medal of the weekend, finishing in 7:18.62 and the men followed with a time of 6:36.86.
- New Hampshire junior Allison Stefanelli took gold in the women’s 3-meter diving with a score of 228.10.
- UMBC senior Elijah Wright earned first place in the men’s 1-meter diving by scoring 302.30.
- The quartet of Alexander Gliese, Luis Galvan Cardenas, Tiago Asakawa and Ilia Rattsev for UMBC set a record in the 200-yard medley relay with a time of 1:27.41, breaking the record UMBC set in 2018 with a time of 1:28.61.
Day 2 events begin at 10:00 a.m. on Friday with trials in the men’s and women’s 500-yard freestyle, 200 Individual Medley, 50-yard freestyle and men’s 3-meter diving. Finals in nine events start at 5:30 p.m. The #AESD Championships can be streamed live all weekend long on AmericaEast.TV.
