Vermont and UMBC, currently the top two teams in the men’s #AEHoops standings, will next meet on Feb. 21 in Baltimore and that matchup will air on ESPNU, the conference office was informed by ESPN Thursday. Tip time is 7 p.m.

The two teams famously met in the conference championship game last season with Jairus Lyles’ buzzer-beating three-pointer lifting UMBC to a 65-62 upset win. The victory propelled the Retrievers to its historic upset over Virginia in the NCAA tournament.

UMBC (14-9, 6-2 AE) dealt Vermont (16-5, 6-1 AE) its only conference loss on Jan. 23 beating the Catamounts, 74-61 in Burlington.

The matchup features some of the top upper classmen in the conference in Vermont’s Anthony Lamb and Ernie Duncan and UMBC’s Joe Sherburne. Lamb, who missed the first meeting between the two teams with a concussion, leads the league averaging 20.6 points per game. Duncan is 10th at 14.7 ppg and Sherburne is 14.5 ppg and both players are shooting 42 percent from three-point land.

This will mark the 12th-consecutive year that a men’s #AEHoops regular-season game will air on ESPNU. UMBC will be holding it’s SpreadRespect night as part of the gameday festivities. Both teams will wear special shooting shirts and help bring awareness to promoting equality and safety for all coaches, student-athletes and fans without regard to race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or gender identity.
