Stony Brook, Hartford Headed to #AEWSOC Title Game After Semis Wins
For the first time since 2012, Stony Brook and Hartford will decide the America East women’s soccer title after both teams won semifinal contests on Thursday evening. The top-seeded Seawolves held off fourth-seeded New Hampshire, 2-1, while the third-seeded Hawks went into Albany and knocked off the second-seeded Great Danes, 3-2.
Stony Brook and Hartford, who played to a scoreless tie on a windy night in their regular-season meeting on Oct. 31, will play for the league crown on Sunday, Nov. 10 at 1 p.m. at Stony Brook’s LaValle Stadium. The game will air on AmericaEast.TV.
#1 Stony Brook 2, #4 New Hampshire 1
- Erin O’Connor found the back of the net twice to lift Stony Brook past UNH in the semifinals Thursday.
- The Seawolves are playing in the title game for the second time in three years and the sixth time overall.
- All the scoring came in a span of less than four minutes as O’Connor gave Stony Brook a 1-0 lead in the 60th minute only to have UNH’s Kaylan Williams tie the score at one just 1:09 later.
- But, O’Connor responded just 2:44 later sending home her second of the game.
- The Seawolves are seeking their second title in three seasons.
#3 Hartford 3, #2 UAlbany 2
- Bridgette Alexander’s goal in the 70th minute lifted Hartford past UAlbany in the semifinals Thursday.
- The Hawks are playing in their first title game since falling to the Great Danes in the 2016 title tilt. Overall, it’s their league-best 14th championship game appearance.
- The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first 16 minutes on goals by Victoria Jedrychowski (’11) and Sierra Stone (’16).
- The Great Danes, the America East co-regular-season champions, scored the next two goals to even the score 2-2 as AE Rookie of the Year Leah Pais (’31) and Meghan Cavanaugh (’47) found the back of the net.
- Alexander broke the tie at the 69:19 mark sending home a rebound past UAlbany keeper Sophia Chen.
- Hartford is seeking its first title since 2006.
The winner of Sunday’s America East women’s soccer title game will earn the league’s automatic berth to the NCAA tournament. Teams will learn their NCAA draw during the selection show on Monday at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com.
