Cal, Stanford Advance in #AEFH Championship Play

WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – On the opening day of the 2019 America East Field Hockey Championship, #5 Cal and #3 Stanford advanced with wins in the quarterfinals. The Golden Bears rode two fourth quarter goals to a 2-1 win over #4 New Hampshire. The Cardinal followed in a tightly-contested match with a fourth quarter goal of its own, topping #6 UAlbany 1-0.
 
 Cal 2, New Hampshire 1
  • Trailing 1-0 from early in the second quarter, the Bears rallied in the final fifteen, scoring twice in the span of 62 seconds.
  • Lindsay Mathison broke the ice off a penalty corner and assisted on the following goal, for a three-point day.
  • All-Conference choice Megan Rodgers potted the game-winner with her 13th goal of the year.
  • The Bears are appearing in the semifinals for the first time since 2016 and are now 2-3 all-time in the #AEFH quarterfinals.
  • They will play #1 Monmouth in the first semifinals game Friday at 11 a.m.
 
Stanford 1, UAlbany 0
  • Goalkeeper of the Year Kelsey Bing held strong in cage, making seven saves en route to her fifth shutout of the season.
  • In the 51st minute with the game scoreless, Offensive Player of the Year Corinne Zanolli scored the game’s lone goal off a corner set up by Sarah Johnson and Fenella Scutt.
  • Zanolli increased her nation-leading goal total to 29.
  • The Cardinal uprooted the defending champion Great Danes in the teams’ first-ever #AEFH championship matchup.
  • Stanford will play #2 Maine at 1:30 p.m. on Friday in a rematch of last year’s semifinals, which the Black Bears won 3-0. The Black Bears lead the all-time postseason series 2-0.
