Stanford Wins Third #AEFH Championship in Four Years
WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. – Behind Sarah Johnson’s 58th minute goal, the Stanford Cardinal are champions of America East field hockey once again. With the game tied at 1-1 late in the fourth quarter, the Cardinal were awarded their tenth penalty corner of the game and Johnson cleaned up a rebound to record the game-winning goal.
#17 Stanford are #AEFH champs for the third time in four years and will appear in the NCAA Tournament for the 17th time in school history. The team will host Miami (OH) in the Opening Round on Wednesday, November 13 at 2 p.m. ET (11 a.m. PT).
With the victory Sunday afternoon, the Cardinal have now won nine of its last ten games, snapping a nine-game Monmouth win streak simultaneously. The Cardinal are the only #AEFH team to defeat the Hawks in 2019.
The scoring opened just over five minutes into the game as Corinne Zanolli sent her 30th goal of the season to the back of the cage to give the Cardinal a 1-0 lead, which they carried into halftime. The junior became just the second 30-goal scorer in conference history. Shortly after the break, Monmouth senior Josephine van der Hoop knotted the game by deflecting a penalty corner past the goalkeeper.
Stanford’s defense was strong throughout a physical championship game, holding Monmouth to just two shots over 60 minutes. Cardinal senior Kelsey Bing allowed just one goal in three games over the course of the weekend and was named to the All-Championship Team.
Bing, Johnson, Fenella Scutt and Corinne Zanolli represented the Cardinal on the All-Championship Team with Johnson earning Most Outstanding Player honors. Hawks goalkeeper Kate O’Hogan made ten saves and earned a spot on the team along with Meg de Lange and Yasmin Pratt. Also on the squad was Cal’s Brynn Zorilla and Lindsay Mathison, Maine’s Cassandra Mascarenhas and Mia Borley, UAlbany’s Dana Bozek and New Hampshire’s Bloem van den Brekel.
Bing was awarded the Elite 18 with her 3.95 GPA in mechanical engineering.
