Vermont's President Sullivan, Commissioner Huchthausen Named to NCAA Committees
A pair of America East leaders have been appointed to influential NCAA committees. University of Vermont President Tom Sullivan was named to the NCAA Division I Committee on Infractions and America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen was named to the NCAA Board of Governors Ad Hoc Committee on Sports Wagering.
“It’s a great honor to be asked by the NCAA to serve on the Committee on Infractions,” Sullivan said. “Working to ensure the fairness and integrity of collegiate athletics is of paramount importance. I look forward to contributing to the committee’s important work.”
The Division I Committee on Infractions (COI) is an independent administrative body charged with deciding infractions cases involving NCAA member institutions and their employees. The COI, which is comprised of individuals serving as volunteers from NCAA member institutions and conferences and select individuals from the general public with legal backgrounds, has the authority to address prehearing procedural matters, set and conduct hearings or reviews, find facts, conclude violations of NCAA legislation, prescribe appropriate penalties and monitor institutions on probation to ensure compliance with penalties and terms of probation. It also has the authority to conduct follow-up proceedings as may be necessary. The committee is also charged with hearing the appeals of individuals subject to a show-cause order in Level III cases, as well as other duties as authorized by the bylaws.
Sullivan, who will retire as president from the University of Vermont at the end of the year after seven years as head of the university, previously served as vice chair of the NCAA's Division I Presidential Forum. His term will run through August, 2021.
“I’m thrilled for President Sullivan and congratulate him on earning this important appointment,” said Huchthausen. “His background and knowledge base make him the perfect fit for this committee. I am also humbled to be selected by the Board of Governors for the Ad Hoc Committee on Sports Wagering. It is an important topic in our industry right now and I am honored to be chosen to examine the matter and its impact on college sports.”
The Board of Governors has asked the committee to review NCAA sports wagering legislation to determine if any changes are needed in this new environment; consider the need and a possible process for player availability reporting; and evaluate risk assessment by sport for current and future monitoring of NCAA competition.
Huchthausen has previously served the NCAA in several capacities, including on the Division I Enforcement/Investigations Working Group, the Transfer Issues Working Group and was chair of the NCAA Leadership Council Transfer Issues Subcommittee. She has also served as a member of the Division I Academics/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and Legislative Review & Interpretations Committee.
Sullivan and Huchthausen are the latest America East administrators to receive important NCAA appointments. University of Hartford President Gregory Woodward currently serves on the NCAA Presidential Forum while Stony Brook Athletic Director Shawn Heilbron is on the Division I Council and several others serve on other various committees.
