Maine Bests Two Ranked Opponents, Lands Pair of #AEFH Weekly Awards
BOSTON – It was a big week for the Maine Black Bears, who tallied two wins over ranked opponents and climbed to #19 in the national field hockey rankings. The Black Bears improved to 3-0 on the season by defeating then 19th-ranked Boston University 2-1 Friday followed by a 2-1 overtime victory over #24 Ohio State.
#21 Albany earned its first win of the season in its home opener, shutting out Patriot League foe Colgate 5-0. California also picked up a shutout victory over Miami (Ohio), the Bears’ first clean slate since September 8 of last year.
Here are the conference’s weekly award winners:
Offensive Player of the Week
Libby Riedl, Maine – Sr., Midfield, Port Moody, British Columbia
- Scored the game-winning goal in overtime against #24 Ohio State.
- It was her second game-winner in three games.
- Recorded six shots in two games combined, including a game-high five against the Buckeyes.
- This is Riedl’s first Offensive Player of the Week award this season and fourth of her career.
Defensive Player of the Week
Danielle Mentink, California – Jr., Goalkeeper, Davis, California
- Did not allow a goal in Cal’s win against Miami.
- Mentink tallied five saves and was perfect against the Red Hawks’ five penalty corner attempts.
- It was her second career shutout and the Bears’ first win over the Red Hawks since 2006.
- Mentink was named #AEFH Defensive Player of the Week for the first time this season and second time in her career.
Rookie of the Week
Mia Borley, Maine – Fr., Goalkeeper, Durham, England
- Allowed just one goal in each game against two ranked opponents.
- Compiled seven saves in the two wins combined.
- The freshman is 3-0 with a 0.98 goals against average to start the season.
- It is her first career #AEFH weekly award.
