UMass Lowell, UNH, Vermont Stay Hot; Week #3 Awards Announced
BOSTON – America East men’s soccer teams went 9-5-1, including two wins each for UMass Lowell, New Hampshire and Vermont. The River Hawks, ranked #22 in the United Soccer Coaches' rankings, beat local rivals Harvard and Northeastern to stay unbeaten at 5-0-1. New Hampshire and Vermont each ran its win streak to four games.
The majority of #AEMSOC conference games will appear AmericaEast.TV, the place to watch free live content on any device, including the network's Apple TV, Roku, Amazon Fire and Android TV OTT channels. Here are the conference's week #3 award winners:
Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Serge Gamwanya, Stony Brook - Sr., Midfielder, Trondheim, Norway
- Accounted for all three of Stony Brook's goals in a 1-0-1 week for the Seawolves.
- Scored twice in a 2-1 win over St. Joseph's Wednesday.
- Had Stony Brook's lone goal in a 1-1 tie vs. Siena Saturday.
- This is Gamwanya's first #AEMSOC Offensive Player of the Week award of the season and first of his career.
Co-Offensive Player of the Week
Justin Freitas, Vermont - Sr., Midfielder, Trondheim, Norway
- Had two goals and an assist in a 2-0 week for Vermont.
- Named MVP of the Peter Baldwin Memorial Classic.
- Scored twice in a 4-0 victory over Fairleigh Dickinson Friday and set up the game winner in a 2-0 win over Central Conn. State Sunday.
- This is Freitas' first #AEMSOC Offensive Player of the Week award of the season and first of his career. He earned Player of the Week honors on 10/30/17.
Defensive Player of the Week
Chris Shutler, Binghamton - Jr., Goalkeeper, Ashburn, Va.
- Stopped 11 of 12 shots he faced to lead Binghamton to a 1-0-1 week.
- Made seven stops in a scoreless tie with Monmouth Tuesday and four saves in a win over Lehigh Friday.
- This is Shutler's first career Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Rookie of the Week
Sergi Martinez, Hartford – Fr., Midfielder, Barcelona, Spain
- Had a goal and two assists in two games for Hartford.
- Factored in on both of the Hawks' goals (1 goal, 1 assist) in a 2-2 tie with Big 10-foe Rutgers on Saturday.
- This is Martinez's first #AEMSOC Rookie of the Week award of his career.
