UMass Lowell, UC Davis Earn Weekly Awards Behind 2-0 Starts
BOSTON – The 2018 America East field hockey season began in impressive fashion last weekend with five of the seven programs in action picking up wins on opening day. A number of ranked foes appeared on the schedule, including two top-five teams in reigning national champion and #1 Connecticut and national runner-up and current #4 Maryland. UC Davis opened their season with a 2-0 record for the first time since 2012 while UMass Lowell accomplished the same feat for the first time since 2015.
Here are the conference’s first weekly award winners of 2018:
Offensive Player of the Week
Torrie Huk, UMass Lowell – Sr., Forward, Milford, Del.
- Notched eight points in a pair of wins to guide the River Hawks to a 2-0 start.
- Scored two of the team’s three goals in season opener against Bryant.
- Compiled two four-point games to lead the River Hawks to victory in inaugural River Hawk Classic Championship.
Defensive Player of the Week
Eva Berkhout, UMass Lowell – Jr., Goalkeeper, Utrecht, Netherlands
- Recorded the first shutout of her career in UMass Lowell’s win over Bryant.
- Blanked Hofstra in the River Hawk Classic Championship Game for her second consecutive shutout.
- Totaled six saves on 14 shots to help the River Hawks to their first 2-0 start since 2015.
Rookie of the Week
Eline van den Bosch, UC Davis – Fr., Midfielder, Sneek Netherlands
- Scored her first career goal against Temple to tie the game before the Aggies eventually earned their first win of the season.
- Also scored the game-tying goal and tallied her first career assist against Providence.
- Her team-high two goals and five points on the season guided the Aggies to their first 2-0 start since 2012.
