Albany Claims Commissioner's Cup to Culminate America East's Historic 2017-18 Season

SAVANNAH, Ga. – Following one of the most historic overall years in America East history, the University at Albany has claimed the conference's 2017-18 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup once again, the league announced this evening at its annual awards dinner Tuesday evening. The Cup is Albany's sixth-straight and seventh overall,

The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference's 18 sports.

  • 2017-18 was one of the most accomplished athletic seasons in America East history, highlighted by UMBC men’s basketball’s NCAA win over #1 Virginia, top-ranked lacrosse teams, Albany men’s lacrosse reaching the NCAA semifinals and an individual national champion in indoor track & field.
  • Every school won either a conference championship or a regular-season title.
  • Eight of the nine schools had runner-up finishes.
  • Seven schools won regular-season titles.
  • Albany won a conference-best six America East championships in 2017-18. The Great Danes also won four regular-season titles and had a pair of runner up finishes.
  • Stony Brook University placed second for the sixth-consecutive year.
  • New Hampshire was third for the second-straight year.
  • In its first year as a full Division I member, UMass Lowell placed fourth.
  • In addition to Albany’s six conference titles, Stony Brook won four, UMBC and New Hampshire each won a pair, while Hartford, Maine and UMass Lowell each captured one. Stanford, an associate member in field hockey, won the field hockey title to round out the 18 America East 2017-18 champions.
The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points. 

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, track & field, swimming & diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
