Michael Schmidt Named America East Women’s Basketball Coordinator of Officials
BOSTON – America East Commissioner Amy Huchthausen announced today that longtime women’s basketball official Michael Schmidt has been hired as the conference's new Women’s Basketball Coordinator of Officials. Schmidt will start his duties ahead of the upcoming 2018-19 season.
“I am truly humbled by this opportunity to serve the America East Conference and its nine institutions,” said Schmidt. ”I believe the America East is on the cusp of some exciting new opportunities and I consider it an honor to have been selected as its next coordinator.“
“We are excited to bring Michael into the fold as our new women’s basketball officiating coordinator,” said Huchthausen. “As an elite official in our conference and elsewhere for a long time, Michael has established relationships with other officials and our coaches that will help him succeed in his new role and help continue to elevate our officiating program.”
Schmidt, who resides in Webster, N.Y., is a 20-year official at the Division I level. In addition to the America East, Schmidt has officiated games in the ACC, Atlantic 10, Big East, Ivy League, MAAC, Northeast Conference and the Patriot League. He was selected to eight NCAA Division I tournaments and officiated 15 conference championship games during his career on the floor. Additionally, Schmidt serves as coordinator for the Northeastern Women’s Basketball Officiating Consortium, which includes several Division III conferences.
Schmidt, who will retire as an official, replaces Frank Sullivan, who oversaw America East’s women’s basketball officiating program since 2010.
