Four All-Americans Highlight Spring Scholar-Athletes

BOSTON — Six standout student-athletes who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically this year and throughout their collegiate careers are the 2018 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes as announced Thursday morning by the conference office. Four All-Americans highlight the selections.

2018 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes
Elinor Purrier, New Hampshire, Sr. – Women's Outdoor Track & Field 
  • Graduated with a 3.71 GPA in nutrition: wellness and ecogastronomy.
  • Sixth Scholar-Athlete honor all-time.
  • Reigning America East Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
  • Earned her 11th All-America honor all-time at the 2018 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championship by placing seventh in the 1,500-meter run.
  • National champion in the indoor mile at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship becoming just the fourth America East track & field student-athlete to ever win a national title.
  • Was an America East All-Academic selection for the ninth time.
Kyle McClancy, Albany, Sr. – Men’s Lacrosse
  • Graduated with a 3.87 GPA in business administration with a management and finance concentration.
  • America East Man of the Year.
  • Repeat Scholar-Athlete.
  • America East All-Academic choice for the third time in his career.
  • Presidential Scholar-Athlete.
  • Two-time All-American.and two-time America East First-Team All-Conference selection.
  • Led Albany to the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Final Four for the first time.
Courtney Murphy, Stony Brook, Sr. – Women’s Lacrosse
  • Graduated with a 3.56 GPA in business management with a finance concentration and has a 3.89 GPA pursuing her master’s degree in technological systems management.
  • America East All-Academic selection and multi-time honor roll awardee.
  • First-team All-American for the second time.
  • First-team All-America East for the third time.
  • Became the NCAA’s all-time leading goal scorer.
  • Led Stony Brook to its first-ever #1 national ranking and a 20-1 record.
Paul Hogan, UMass Lowell, Sr. – Men’s Outdoor Track & Field
  • Graduated with a 3.59 GPA majoring in civil engineering.
  • Third Scholar-Athlete honor of the year after earning the Men’s Cross Country honor in the fall and Men’s Indoor Track and Field award in April.
  • America East All-Academic Team honoree for the third time this year.
  • Most Outstanding Track Performer at the America East Outdoor Track & Field Championship.
  • Won both the 5,000 and 10,000-meter runs and set a championship meet record in the 10,000.
  • Qualified for NCAA East Regionals in both the 5,000 and 10,000.
Nick Grande, Stony Brook, So. – Baseball
  • Carries a 3.99 GPA as a political science and history double major.
  • First-team CoSIDA Google Cloud Academic All-American.
  • America East All-Academic selection.
  • First-team Collegiate Baseball All-American shortstop.
  • First-team All-America East selection.
Sarah Petzold, Albany, Jr. – Softball
  • Has a 3.90 GPA in both psychology and sociology.
  • America East Elite 18 winner in softball.
  • America East All-Academic selection.
  • First-team All-Conference choice.
  • America East All-Championship selection after leading Albany to its second-straight conference title.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the spring season including baseball, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s outdoor track & field and softball. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.

Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced on July 17.
