Albany Downs Richmond, Advances to 2nd Round of NCAA Men's Lacrosse Tourney

ALBANY, N.Y. - For the fourth time in the last five years, Albany is on to the quarterfinals of the NCAA Men's Lacrosse Championship. The Great Danes, seeded #2 in the tournamnent, defeated Southern Conference champion Richmond, 18-9, in front of 4,800 fans at Albany's Casey Stadium Saturday evening.

The NCAA win is the 13th all-time for the conference and seventh since 2007.

The Great Danes jumped out 4-0 and led 9-5 at halftime. Albany, the America East champion for the fifth time in the last six years, then used a 6-0 run bridging the third and fourth quarters to take a 17-8 lead.

America East Offensive Player of the Year Connor Fields led the Great Danes with seven points on two goals and five assists. Tehoka Nanticoke, the America East Rookie of the Year, added four goals and two assists, while Sean Eccles and Troy Reh each scored three times apiece.

TD Ierlan, the America East Defensive Player of the Year, went 24-for-29 on faceoffs and picked up 21 ground balls. During the game, he broke the NCAA single-season record for ground balls and has 240 in his career.

Albany will play the winner of 7-seed Notre Dame and Denver in the NCAA quarterfinals on Saturday, May 19 at either noon or 2:30 p.m. at Hofstra University.
