Purrier, Sherburne Highlight 2017-18 Winter Scholar-Athletes
BOSTON — Six standout student-athletes who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically this year and throughout their collegiate careers are the 2017-18 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes as announced Wednesday afternoon by the conference office. A national champion and Academic All-American highlight the selections.
2017-18 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes
Elinor Purrier, New Hampshire, Sr. – Women's Indoor Track & Field
- Has a 3.71 GPA in nutrition.
- Fifth Scholar-Athlete honor all-time.
- Reigning America East Female Scholar-Athlete of the Year.
- National champion in the indoor mile at the 2018 NCAA Indoor Track & Field Championship becoming just the fourth America East track & field student-athlete to ever win a national title.
- Was an America East All-Academic selection for the eighth time.
Joe Sherburne, UMBC, Jr. – Men’s Basketball
- Carries a perfect 4.00 GPA in financial economics.
- Became the first America East men’s basketball standout to earn first-team Academic All-America status from CoSIDA.
- America East All-Academic choice for the second time in his career.
- Helped UMBC win the 2018 America East men’s basketball title and contributed 14 points and six rebounds in UMBC’s historic upset of #1 Virginia in the NCAA tournament.
Lindsey Abed, Hartford, Jr. – Women’s Basketball
- Has a 3.61 GPA in economics.
- America East All-Academic selection.
- America East Second-Team All-Conference selection.
- Led Hartford to America East championship game.
Paul Hogan, UMass Lowell, Sr. – Men’s Indoor Track & Field
- Holds a 3.60 GPA majoring in civil engineering.
- Second Scholar-Athlete honor of the year after earning the Men’s Cross Country honor in the fall.
- America East All-Academic Team honoree for the second time this year.
- Finished second in the 3,000 meters and third in the 5,000 meters at the America East Indoor Track & Field Championship to help UMass Lowell win its first-ever America East Indoor Track & Field team title.
Ross Bernstein, Binghamton, So. – Men’s Swimming & Diving
- Carries a 3.83 GPA in financial accounting.
- America East All-Academic selection in 2017-18.
- Placed second in the 400 IM and the 200 butterfly and fourth in the 200 IM at the 2018 America East Swimming & Diving Championship.
Emily Borger, Maine, Sr. – Women’s Swimming & Diving
- Has a 3.77 GPA in marine science.
- Three-time America East All-Academic selection.
- Set school record in the first leg of the 400-yard freestyle relay and was on the 200-yard freestyle relay squad that was second at the 2018 America East Championship.
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving and men’s and women’s outdoor track & field. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
