BOSTON – For the first time in over a decade the America East Softball Championship will be played at a predetermined site as Binghamton University will host the 2018 tournament May 9-12. America East’s Athletic Directors’ Council approved Binghamton as the site, as recommended by the conference’s Championships & Competition Committee, on Wednesday morning.

The ADC previously approved, in October, the coaches’ recommendation to host the championship at a predetermined campus site rather than the No. 1 seed to prioritize the conference’s best facilities and allow for better championship preparation. Binghamton has hosted the championship three times previously, including 2013, ’16 and ’17.

“We are excited to host the America East Championship again this year,” said Binghamton head softball coach Michelle Burrell. “Our facilities and events staff, as well as all our support staff at Binghamton, have done a fantastic job hosting the tournament the last two years and making this a great experience for the student athletes. We feel lucky to have such amazing facilities and the new field surface will allow us to host an even better tournament this year.”

The Binghamton University Softball Complex opened in 2012, and features nearly 400 chairback seats, professional-style sunken dugouts and outdoor batting cages and bullpens. In early 2018, the field surface was upgraded to include Hilltopper Infield Mix and a field turf outfield.

The top six teams in the America East Softball standings will qualify for the 2018 championship. The double-elimination tournament will feature up to 11 games and be played May 9-12.
