3 #AEMLAX Teams Earn Wins to Start '18; Week #1 Awards Announced

BOSTON – The 2018 men’s lacrosse season is underway for five #AEMLAX programs. Vermont is off to a 3-0 start and knocking on the door of the national rankings, while UMBC and UMass Lowell also picked up wins. Albany, the #3 team in the country, opens its season Saturday at #10 Syracuse.

Albany was the unanimous choice of the #AEMLAX coaches in the preseason poll. Full results here.

Here are the 2018 week #1 award winners:

Offensive Player of the Week
Sean Tyrrell, UMass Lowell – Sr., Attackman, Calgary, Alb.
  • Tallied a career-high five points in leading UMass Lowell to a 13-12 OT win over Quinnipiac Sunday.
  • Had four goals and an assist in the win.
  • Also added five ground balls.
  • This is Tyrrell’s second career Offensive Player of the Week honor (2/13/17).
Defensive Player of the Week
Tommy Lingner, UMBC – Fr., Goalkeeper, Fort Salonga, N.Y.
  • Allowed just two goals in 50-plus minutes of action after coming off the bench to lead UMBC to a 9-6 win at Richmond.
  • Stopped 13 of the 15 shots he faced, including six in the fourth quarter.
  • This is Lingner’s first #AEMLAX Defensive Player of the Week honor.
Rookie of the Week
Steven Zichelli, UMBC – Fr., Midfielder, Severna Park, Md.
  • Tallied four points on two goals and two assists in leading UMBC to a 9-6 win over Richmond Sunday.
  • This is Zichelli’s first #AEMLAX Rookie of the Week honor.
