ALBANY, N.Y. – For the third time in the last four years, UAlbany is the America East women’s soccer champion. The third-seeded Great Danes scored five times, including twice in the first 20 minutes, to upend fourth-seeded UMass Lowell, 5-1, in the conference’s 2018 championship game Sunday afternoon at Casey Stadium.

UAlbany, winner of six-straight games, earned America East’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship and will learn its draw during the selection show on Monday afternoon at 4:30 p.m. on NCAA.com. America East teams have 11 NCAA wins all time.

America East Striker of the Year Mariah Williams set up the first two goals and had six points in the tournament to earn Most Outstanding Player honors. She ranks among the nation’s leaders with 17 goals and 38 points.

The Great Danes (14-6-2) wasted no time getting on the board. America East Rookie of the Year Jada Colbert took a feed from Williams and found the back of the net just 43 seconds in to give her team a 1-0 advantage.

Jada’s twin sister, Jasmine, doubled UAlbany’s advantage just 18:24 later. She too took a cross from Williams and buried it to give the Great Danes a 2-0 lead.

Jasmine Colbert, an All-Championship team selection, added her second score of the game in the 61st minute, capitalizing off a free kick from 25 yards out by Caroline Kopp, the league’s Defender of the Year, and set up by Megan Cavanaugh.

UMass Lowell (7-9-5), which was making its first-ever America East Championship game appearance, got on the board in the 76th minute on Lily Fabian’s second goal of the tournament. She was an All-Championship team choice.

Cavanaugh and Christina Cernuto scored UAlbany’s fourth and fifth goals, respectively, to wrap up the scoring. The Great Danes outshot the River Hawks 23-8 for the game.

Williams, Jasmine Colbert, Cavanaugh and Fabian were joined on the All-Championship team by Jada Colbert, Cavanaugh, UMass Lowell’s Julia Schneider and Rachel Morrier, Hartford’s Hayley Nolan and Maia Perez, Stony Brook’s Allyson Baner and Fanny Gotesson, New Hampshire's Gaby Dorsey and Vermont's Lydia Kessel.

UMass Lowell’s Maggie Davenport earned the conference's Elite 18 honor for women’s soccer by having the highest GPA among participating student-athletes in the championship game. The senior carries a 3.92 GPA in mechanical engineering.
