UMBC Sweeps First Women's #AEHoops Awards of Season

BOSTON – The 2018-19 America East women’s basketball season tipped off last week and six #AEHoops programs have already played multiple games. UMBC is off to their best start since the 1985-86 season after winning its first four games. The defending champion Maine Black Bears began their season with a marquee win against Toledo, who was picked second in the MAC West preseason poll.
 
Here are the conference’s weekly award winners:
 
Player of the Week
Janee’a Summers, UMBC – So., Forward, Bound Brook, N.J.
  • Averaged 16.5 points and 6.5 rebounds, shooting 44 percent in UMBC’s perfect week.
  • Scored a career-high 22 points in the season-opening win over Gettysburg.
  • This is Summers’s first career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Paula Rubio, UMBC – Fr., Guard, Madrid, Spain
  • Kicked off her college career with 12 points in UMBC’s season opener.
  • Compiled averages of 6.5 points and 2.0 assists per game helping the Retrievers to their best start since the 1985-86 season.
  • Also shot 50 percent over the course of four games.
