Strong Start for #AEMSOC Teams Continues; Week #2 Awards Announced
BOSTON – America East men's soccer teams continued their strong start to the 2017 campaign last week. #AEMSOC squads are a combined 17-8-1 on the young season, good for a .673 win percentage. Every program except one has at least two wins and UMass Lowell and New Hampshire are two of just 25 Division I programs with perfect records. Both programs are ranked in the United Soccer Coaches Division I National Poll this week with the River Hawks coming at #12 and the Wildcats ranked #24. America East is one of just seven conference with multiple programs ranked.
Here are the conference's week two award winners:
Player of the Week
Afonso Pinheiro, Albany – Sr., Forward, Sao Paulo, Brazil
- Tallied seven points on three goals and an assist in two Albany wins last week.
- Had a goal and an assist in a 4-0 win over Rhode Island Monday.
- Scored twice in a 3-1 win at George Mason Friday.
- This is Pinheiro's first #AEMSOC Player of the Week honor of the season and third of his career (10/10/16, 11/2/15).
Rookie of the Week
Alex Popovich, Vermont – R-Fr., Goalkeeper, Louisville, Ky.
- Recorded a shutout in his collegiate debut, a 2-0 win over Niagara Sunday.
- Made four saves, including three in the first half.
- This is Popovich’s first career #AEMSOC Rookie of the Week award.
