Melian Named Finalist for NCAA Woman of Year Award
INDIANAPOLIS –
America East has its first-ever NCAA Woman of the Year finalist. Stony Brook's Christina Melian was among the nine finalists named by the NCAA on Wednesday.
The finalists, three from each NCAA division, will be honored at an awards dinner at the NCAA offices on Oct. 22. The 2017 NCAA Woman of the Year will be crowned at the event.
The NCAA Woman of the Year award honors seniors whose college careers were highlighted by outstanding achievements in academics, athletics, community service and leadership.
Melian graduated from Stony Brook a with a 3.92 GPA in health science with a concentration in emergency and critical care in May. An America East Presidential Scholar-Athlete, Elite 17 honoree and three-time Scholar-Athlete, Melian was also a four-time NCAA individual qualifier in cross country and track & field.
Melian was tabbed a Top 30 honoree, along with New Hampshire's Laura Rose Donegan, on Sept. 6. America East was one of just two conferences across all divisions with multiple Top 30 honorees.
The nine finalists were chosen from 30 Woman of the Year honorees, who will be recognized during the event. This group of 30 includes 10 honorees from each NCAA division and represents a range of sports. Schools nominated 543 college athletes for the award.
