UMass Lowell, Albany Advance to #AEMSOC Title Game
UMass Lowell and Albany will play for the 2017 America East men’s soccer title after both teams won semifinal contests Wednesday evening. The second-seeded River Hawks beat third-seeded, New Hampshire, 2-1, while fourth-seeded Great Danes upended top-seeded Vermont, 1-0.
In Burlington, Nico Solabarrieta scored the lone goal in the 32
nd minute to give Albany a 1-0 win. The Catamounts, the league’s regular-season champion, had chances as they outshot the Great Danes, 11-6, but Danny Vitiello made five saves to earn the shutout win.
In Lowell, the River Hawks, who were appearing in their first #AEMSOC tournament game after completing their transition to Division I, jumped out to a 2-0 lead on goals by Ivan Blaskic (26’) and Ivan Abramovic (75’). New Hampshire, which should receive an at-large bid to the NCAA tournament, got within one on Willis Griffith’s score (76’) but it could not get the equalizer.
UMass Lowell will host Albany, the reigning league champion, in the championship game Sunday at 2 p.m. at Cushing Field. The game will air on ESPN3. The winner will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA tournament while the runner-up will be in consideration for an at-large bid.
