Stony Brook Wins First #AEWSOC Title Since 2012, Draws Penn State for NCAAs

STONY BROOK, N.Y. — For the first time since 2012, Stony Brook is the America East women’s soccer champion. After winning twice on the road to advance to the league title game, the fifth-seeded Seawolves beat sixth-seeded Vermont, 2-1, Sunday at home in the league’s first-ever matchup of 5 and 6 seeds in the championship game.
 
Stony Brook (11-10-0) jumped out to a 2-0 lead, scoring twice in the first half. Alyssa Francese scored in 18th minute and Manuela Corcho added the Seawolves’ second goal in the 33rd minute.
 
Vermont (9-8-2), which was making its first-ever title game appearance, drew within one on Sarah Martin’s goal in the 69th minute, but America East Rookie of the Year Sofia Manner made four of her five saves in the second half to help give Stony Brook its second conference title in program history.
 
The Seawolves earned the conference’s automatic bid to the NCAA Women’s Soccer Championship and will face #3 seed Penn State in the first round Friday at 7:30 p.m. Full NCAA Bracket
 
Stony Brook’s Sydney Vaughn was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player after leading a defense that allowed just one goal in three games. Vaughn was joined on the All-Championship team by teammates Corcho, Kimmy Charkin and Franki Priore, Vermont’s Martin, Brooke Jenkins and Coco Speckmaier, New Hampshire’s Jackie Feraco and Brooke Murphy, Binghamton’s  Katie Hatziyianis and Dora Hayes, Albany’s Katie Gowing and Hartford’s Hayley Nolan.

Jenkins earned the 2017 America East women's soccer Elite 18 Award, given to the student-athlete competing in the championship game that carries the highest GPA. The senior has a 3.83 GPA in economics.
