Albany, UNH Move Onto #AEMSOC Semifinals
Albany and New Hampshire kept their quests for an America East men’s soccer championship alive Saturday as the two teams advanced to the semifinals of the 2017 #AEMSOC Championship after quarterfinal action Saturday.
The Great Danes, the tournament’s #4 seed, tied #5 UMBC, 1-1, before winning the penalty kick shootout, 4-2, while #3 New Hampshire got a second-half goal to beat #6 Stony Brook, 1-0.
In Albany, first-team All-Conference standout Afonso Pinherio delivered the deciding shootout conversion to send his team to the semifinals for the third-straight year. Daniel Krutzen gave Albany a 1-0 lead in the 18th minute, but UMBC tied it up on Sammy Kahsai’s score in the 83rd minute. After neither team scored in overtime, Albany converted four kicks to UMBC’s two to move on.
In Durham, Jacob Gould scored the game’s only goal in the 71st minute to help UNH advance to the semifinals for the first time since 2013. Gould blasted home a shot from 25 yards out and the Wildcat defense did the rest holding Stony Brook to just six shots, including one on goal.
The semifinals take place Wednesday with New Hampshire visiting #2 UMass Lowell and Albany heading to #1 Vermont. Both games are at 7 p.m. on AmericaEast.TV.
