Albany & UNH Top First 2017-18 Commissioner’s Cup Standings

BOSTON - After combining to win a pair of conference championships and three regular-season titles, Albany and New Hampshire sit tied atop the 2017-18 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr., Commissioner’s Cup Standings following the fall season. Stony Brook, which won a league-best three championships in the fall, is third in the standings, which were announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon.

The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition in the conference's 18 sports.

Need to Know
  • Seven of America East’s nine member institutions won a championship or regular-season title or had a runner-up finish this fall.
  • Winners of five-straight Commissioner’s Cups, Albany won its second-straight men’s soccer title as well as regular-season crowns in field hockey and volleyball.
  • New Hampshire is in first place after the fall season for the fifth time in the last nine years after winning its fifth-straight women’s cross country title and its first women’s soccer regular-season crown since 2007.
  • The Wildcats also earned significant points in men’s soccer before becoming the fifth #AEMSOC squad to reach the third round of the NCAA tournament.
  • Stony Brook was the league champion in men’s cross country, women’s soccer and volleyball, its first #AEVB title in program history.
  • In its first season of full Division I eligibility, UMass Lowell had a league-best three runner-up finishes in the fall (men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer).  
  • Vermont (5th place) reached the women’s soccer title game for the first time while Binghamton (6th) captured its first women’s soccer regular-season title since 2004 and Maine (7th) shared the field hockey East Division regular-season title with Albany.
The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner's Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points. 

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, track & field, swimming & diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
