Stony Brook, UMass Lowell Net Opening Women's #AEHoops Weekly Awards

BOSTON – The 2017-18 America East women’s basketball season tipped off last weekend as Stony Brook and Maine both picked up wins. Maine’s 76-51 victory over Ivy League preseason #3 Harvard highlighted the opening weekend.

Here are this week’s award winners:
 
Player of the Week
Shania Johnson, Stony Brook – Jr., G, Frederick, Md.
  • Johnson filled out the stat sheet in a season-opening win for the Seawolves
  • The community college transfer had 20 points, seven assists, five rebounds and five steals in her first Division I contest
  • She also shot 53.3% from the field
  • It is her first career #AEHoops weekly award
 
Rookie of the Week
Paula Lopez, UMass Lowell – Fr., G, Leon, Spain
  • Lopez led the River Hawks in scoring in her first two career games, averaging 17.5 points in 32 minutes
  • She shot 60.9% from the floor, including 71.4% from three-point range
  • The freshman also added five assists and three steals in two games
  • It is her first career #AEHoops weekly award
