Stony Brook, Vermont Advance to #AEWSOC Semifinals

For the first time since 2012 and just the third time ever, the #5 and #6 seeds have advanced to the semifinals of the America East Women’s Soccer Championship as #5 Stony Brook and #6 Vermont each posted quarterfinal victories on the road Thursday evening.

The Seawolves scored once in each half to oust #4 Hartford, 2-0, while the Catamounts scored with under a minute remaining to eliminate reigning league champion #3 Albany, 2-1.

Stony Brook 2, Hartford 0
  • Stony Brook has advanced to the semifinals for the first time since 2013.
  • Allyson Baner started the scoring in the 11th minute, heading in a Sam Goodwin’s corner kick.
  • Christen Cahill added an insurance goal with 26 minutes left, her first of the season.
  • America East Rookie of the Year Sofia Manner made four saves in net to earn her fourth shutout of the season.
  • Stony Brook will play at #1 New Hampshire in the semifinals Sunday at 2 p.m.
Vermont 2, Albany 1
  • Brooke Jenkins scored with just 49 seconds remaining to send Vermont to the semifinals for the third-straight season.
  • Jenkins, a second-team All-Conference selection, blasted home a shot from 30 feet out.
  • Albany had tied the game 1-1 on Katie Gowing’s score in the 63rd minute.
  • Coco Speckmaier made six saves in net for the Catamounts, including one with six seconds left to seal the outcome.
  • Vermont will head to Vestal, N.Y. for a matchup with #2 Binghamton in the semifinals Sunday at 1 p.m.
