LOWELL, Mass. - Six teams head to Lowell, Mass. for the 2016 America East Baseball Championship with three games beginning May 25 at noon.

No. 4 UMBC and No. 5 Albany will start things at noon, followed by No. 3 Stony Brook and No. 6 Maine. The losers of those two game will play an elimination game at 7 p.m. No. 1 Binghamton and No. 2 Hartford received first round byes and will await the winners for game one and game two on Thursday.

Every game of the 2016 America East Baseball Championship will be streamed live for free on AmericaEast.TV.

Championship Notes

  • The America East Baseball Championship returns to LeLacheur Park for the fourth-straight year. The tournament will continue to be held in Lowell through 2017.
  • The tournament will be a 6-team, double-elimination format for the first time since 1997. It was a six-team tournament from 1995-97 before becoming a four-team tournament from 1998-2015.
  • No. 1 seed has won 10 titles overall (including last year) and is 51-23 since the tournament went to a double-elimination fromat in 1995. Since ‘98, the No. 1 seed has lost its opening game only four times and has failed to reach the championship round only five times including four-straight years form 2003-06 and 2010.
  • No. 2 seed is 31-34 since 1998 and has a total of six tournament titles. The No. 2 seed has lost its opening game eight times but just twice in the last eight years. No. 2 seeds have only been to the championship round three times in the last six seasons.
  • No. 3 seeds are 35-33 all-time and have won four titles, including Binghamton in 2014. No. 3 seeds also won titles in 2010, 2007 and 2006. The third seed has reached the championship round  eight times, but has lost its opening game in three of the last four years and five of the last seven.
  • No. 4 seeds have won two titles, with both coming in back-to-back years in 2003 & 2004.
  • This is the first year since 1997 the tournament will feature No. 5 and No. 6 seeds. In a double-elimination format, the No. 5 seed is 7-4 and adavnced to the championship round in both 1995 and 1997, winnning the title in 1997. The No. 6 seed is 2-6 all-time.
  • In 2014, Binghamton became the second team in America East history to lose its opening game and then go on to win the championship. Maine also did so as a No. 1 seed in 2002.
  • A team has come out of the loser’s bracket to win three times since 1998 including in 1999, 2002 and 2014. In the six-team format, teams went unbeaten to win the title in both 1997 (Northeastern) and 1995 (Delaware) while Delaware lost one game in 1996 in the title round before winning the if necessary game.
  • The championship has gone to the if necessary game seven times since 1995 including in 2014, ‘13, ‘05, ‘03, ‘02, 1999 and 1996.
