Stony Brook Falls to Syracuse in NCAA 2nd Round

Newton, Mass. - The No. 7/6 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team fell to No. 4/5 Syracuse 7-6 Sunday afternoon in an NCAA Second Round game. With the defeat, the Seawolves conclude their 2016 campaign at 17-4, while the Orange improve to 18-5.

Freshman Kasey Mitchell (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y.) notched a career-high three goals in the loss, while junior Courtney Murphy became the first 100-goal scorer in Division I history.

“It was a really well-played game between the No. 4 and No. 6 teams in the country. I’m really proud of our kids, not only from today, but the entire season. This team and program grew up this year.

“I want to thank our outstanding senior class who helped elevate our program to elite status. They are outstanding players and incredible people who will do great things in life.

The future is bright for this program, as we return over 90% of our scoring next year.”

Turning Point
The Seawolves led 5-3 in the early minutes of the second half before the Orange rattled off four-straight goals. DiSalvo brought the Seawolves to within one at 7-6 before Syracuse ran out the clock.

- Sophomores Kylie Ohlmiller (Islip, N.Y.) and Samantha DiSalvo (Lynbrook, N.Y.) added goals for the Seawolves.
- Freshman Anna Tesoriero (Huntington, N.Y.) tallied four saves.
- Murphy added two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Senior Maegan Meritz (Farmingdale, N.Y.) had two caused turnovers and a ground ball, while senior Alyssa Fleming (Shoreham, N.Y.) recorded two ground balls and two caused turnovers.

- Murphy set the Division I single-season scoring record in 2016 with 100 goals.
- The Seawolves’ 282 goals in 2016 were the second-most in a season in program history (298, 2013).
- The 164 assists were a program record for a single season.
- The Seawolves return 92.8% of their 2016 scoring in 2017.
- Fleming finishes her Seawolves career third in ground balls (142), while Meritz ranks eighth (116).
- Murphy’s 116 points in 2016 are a program and America East record.
- Murphy is now tied for 19th in Division I history with 232 goals and needs just 58 in her senior year to break the Division I career record.
