Newton, Mass. – Junior Courtney Murphy broke the NCAA Division I single-season scoring record in a four-goal night as the No. 7/6 Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team downed No. 17 Boston College 11-9 Friday night in the first round of the 2016 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship. With the win, the Seawolves advance to play No. 4 Syracuse on Sunday at 1 PM at Boston College.

Murphy scored her 99th goal of 2016 in the win, passing the record of 98 held by Delaware’s Karen Emas since 1984. The junior added an assist in the victory and now has 114 points on the season. Sophomore Kylie Ohlmiller added two goals and two assists, while sophomore Samantha DiSalvo racked up a goal, two assists, two ground balls, one draw control and one caused turnover.

Stony Brook and Boston College were tied 8-8 with 14 minutes to go before a run of three-straight goals – two from Murphy bookending a tally from Ohlmiller – gave the Seawolves the lead for good.

The victory is the third in NCAA tournament history for the Seawolves, all coming in the last four years. Stony Brook will play in the second round of the NCAA tournament for the fourth consecutive year. It is the sixth victory in NCAA tournament play for America East teams. Three teams have advanced as far as the NCAA quarterfinals in America East history, with Albany being the last to do it in 2011. Boston U. accomplished the feat twice in 2008 and 2005. No America East team has advanced to the quarterfinal round since the tournament expanded to 26 teams in 2013.

The Seawolves return to action Sunday when they face No. 4/5 Syracuse Sunday at 1 p.m. in Newton, Massachusetts.
