Wayne, N.J. & Stony Brook, N.Y. - Brittany Snow, a senior forward for the Stony Brook University woman's basketball team, has been selected a recipient of the Haier Achievement Award (#HaierAchievement) which is presented to deserving student-athletes for their accomplishments beyond sports. The announcement of this year's eighth and final Haier Achievement Award recipient was made by John Homlish, Senior Vice President and Business Unit Leader of Digital Living for Haier America and Doug Vance, Executive Director of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
"The Haier Achievement Award program brings to light those student-athletes who have achieved success beyond sports," said Homlish. "By recognizing eight inspiring student-athletes like Brittany throughout the year, we hope to further motivate other young people to achieve and succeed both on and off the field. We commend Brittany for being a model student-athlete both in the classroom and in the community."
A psychology major with a 3.67 GPA, Brittany is a Dean's List student and a member of the America East Commissioner's Honor Roll and a CoSIDA Academic All-District I first team member. Since arriving at Stony Brook she has volunteered at numerous events including; Walk for Beauty, Play it Forward, Miracle League of Long Island, YMCA Basketball Camp, ALS Ride for Life, Play Fit Stay Fit, Freedom School Camp, Stony Brook Child Care Services, Barkin' Basement Thrift Store, Stony Brook Hospital Surgery Department, Stony Brook Hospital Oncology Center, Thanksgiving Food Drive, National Girls and Women in Sports Day and the Special Olympics. An active member of the Stony Brook Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), she serves as its Community Service Representative and Event Specialist, where she helps organize a large portion of its events.
On the court she was named to the America East All-Rookie Team as a freshman and the All-Conference third team as a junior. She currently leads the Seawolves in scoring at 15.4 ppg. The native of Shamong, NJ had a spectacular career at Seneca High School and was named the Philadelphia Inquirer South Jersey Player of the Year, Courier Post South Jersey Player of the Year and Burlington County Times Player of the Year in 2012.
"I was very honored and humbled after finding out that I was the recipient of the Haier Achievement Award," said Snow. "I am fortunate to be provided with opportunities at Stony Brook University that a lot of other people do not have, so for me it is very important to pay it forward through community service."
"Brittany is not only an outstanding student-athlete, but she is a young woman who has chosen to get involved in a variety of ways to help impact the lives of those around her. Throughout my time as Brittany's coach, she has displayed a selfless attitude and eagerness to build relationships on our campus and in our community, which has created bonds that will last her a lifetime," said Stony Brook women's head basketball coachCaroline McCombs.
Haier will officially recognize Brittany with an on-court presentation at the March 2nd Stony Brook University men's basketball game. In addition to awarding her with a plaque, Haier will donate $2,000 to the Stony Brook University general scholarship fund and award a Haier 48-inch LED HD television to the school's athletic department.
Student-athletes from all sports, all schools, and all divisions are eligible for the Haier Achievement Award. Haier recognized eight (8) honorees throughout the year and in March will invite fans to vote online, at www.HaierAchievemnt.com, for the Haier Ultimate Achievement Award winner. The winner will earn his/her school a $5,000 donation to the general scholarship fund and a Haier 48-inch LED HD television. Additionally, all fans who vote will be entered into a drawing to win a Haier 48-inch LED HD TV.
The other Haier Achievement Award honorees recognized this season include: Kelly Thomson (Kansas State University), a junior women's basketball player; Megan Fish (University of Central Florida), a senior women's soccer player; Malcolm Mitchell (University of Georgia), a senior football player; senior swimmer Emily Fogle (Purdue University); and Femi Hollinger-Franzen (Indiana University), a senior men's soccer player; Imani Boyette (University of Texas), a senior women's basketball player; and Jesse Gunter (Baldwin Wallace University), a senior wrestler.
