Great Danes Take Home #AETF Titles

STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. – Once again, Albany swept the America East Indoor Track and Field Championships as the Great Dane men and women both took home the titles for the fourth straight year. The 2016 championship was held at Ocean Breeze Track & Field Complex on Staten Island.

The men, whose title is their 11th straight, finished with 180 points, and were followed in second by New Hampshire with 146 points. The women claimed their fourth straight crown and sixth in seven years, earning 210 points, ahed of New Hampshire in second with 133.5.

Day 2 Highlights

  • Binghamton’s junior Keishorea Armstrong took home her second title on Saturday night, this time in the women’s 60-meter dash with a time of 7.47.
  • The 2016 Men’s Most Outstanding Rookie, Osiris Nicholson, took first in the 60-meter dash with a time of 6.87. Binghamton’s Jon Alkins took second with a time of 6.87 on his way to earning the 2016 Coaches Award. Alkins also took gold in the 200.
  • Albany’s Grace Claxton placed first in the women’s 200 and 400-meter dash with times of 24.36 and 54.59 respectively on her way to earning the 2016 Women’s Most Outstanding Track Performer. Her teammate Stephanie Osuji followed closely behind her in the 200 with a time of 24.63 and her teammate Halie Snyder took second in the 400 with a time of 55.84.
  • Albany’s Taariq Jones placed first in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.25, shaving over a second off his prelim race.
  • Albany’s Osayi Owie took first in the women’s 500-meter dash with a time of 1:15.59 after coming in as the third seed. Jason Tomlinson, a fellow Great Dane also took first in the 500 on the men’s side with a time of 1:03.39.
  • New Hampshire’s Danielle Gajewski placed first in the 800-meter run. The sophomore finished with a time of 2:14.23.
  • In the women’s 1000-meter run, Stony Brook’s freshman Holly Manning, who was later named the 2016 Women’s Most Outstanding Rookie, came in first with a time of 2:52.13.
  • Vermont’s Patrick Coppinger placed first in the 1000 after being seeded 6th in the prelims.
  • New Hampshire went 1-2 in the women’s mile run with Elinor Purrier taking first with a time of 4:55.38 and Hannah Kimball following closely behind with a time of 4:58.55.
  • New Hampshire’s Drew Piazza, who was part of Friday nights first place finish in the Distance Medley relay, took first once again in the mile.
  • Both of the 2015 America East Cross Country Indivdual Champions took home first in the 3000-meter run. Christina Melian finished with a time of 9:43.16 and Hassan Omar on the men’s side with a time of 8:28.56.  Omar, who won the 5000 as well, then went on to win the the 2016 Coaches Award and Most Outstanding Track Performer.
  • A trio of Wildcats, Amanda Symanski, Chelsey Serrano and Brianna Boden, placed 3-5 in the women’s mile.
  • Laura Rose Donegan placed first in the 5000-meter run with a time of 16:28.13.
  • Binghamton’s senior Kierra Arthur took first in the women’s 60-meter hurdles after being seeded 6th .  UMBC’s Jamal Cody took first on the men’s side with a time of 8.14.
  • Binghamton’s Tori Shaffer placed first in the women’s high jump with a mark of 1.70-meters.
  • Albany’s Kingsley Ogbonna and Matthew Campbell went 1-2 in the high jump with a mark of 2.07-meters.
  • The Edokobi sisters took home 1-2 for UMBC in the shot put. The duo of Ozioma and Nneoma threw 14.78 and 13.62-meters respectively.  On the men’s side another Retriever took first, Isahq Rana, with a mark of 16.70-meters.
  • Binghamton’s Joe Miceli won the men’s heptathlon with 5,162 total points. He was also honored with the Elite 18 award.
